Del Mar Horse Racing Season

July 18 - September 5, 2012 (five days weekly, except Monday and Tuesday)

The "turf meets the surf" at the Del Mar Racetrack where fans flock each summer to wager on their favorite horses during the popular, annual Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racing season, mid-July - early-September. The magic and nostalgia of this long-time tradition dates back to 1937 when Bing Crosby greeted the first guests, and Seabiscuit won by a nose in the infamous race in 1938. The season features the nation's top horses, trainers and jockeys, and plenty of fun in the sun.

The Summer Concert Series again brings top musical acts to racing fans every Friday, and select Saturdays and Sundays from July 18 through September 5 following the day’s races. The concerts are FREE with racetrack admission purchased prior to the last race. Family Sundays and Free and Easy Wednesdays are back again as well. This year's entertainment calendar highlights include Del Mar's 75th Anniversary Celebration (Jul. 21), the Gourmet Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival (July 28) and the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic (Aug. 26).

San Diego Bayfair featuring Thunderboat Racing

Friday thru Sunday, September 14-16, 2012

Get ready for a weekend of racing from some of the fastest, adrenaline-filled boats on the water. San Diego Bayfair is a three day festival featuring a weekend of thunderboat racing, tunnel hulls, drag boats, and hydroplanes, with fireworks and concerts, and specialty vendors and lots of great food. Over 100 boats are expected, and in addition seeing some great racing, fans will have the opportunity to meet the drivers and watch the boats being prepared for competition.

It's the final stop for the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series before the World Finals in November. Drivers will be competing in 11 classes, including sportsman and professional. Billed as extreme sport of extreme sports, the series’ Top Fuel Hydros are running 260 mph on a quarter-mile course. Testing, qualifying, and racing take place all weekend long, concluding with Sunday’s finals.

Bayfair also welcomes the return of the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes as part of the Air National Guard Hydroplane Series where a full field of boats will compete for the North American Championship. This is the tour’s only race in California and the last North American stop before moving abroad.

MCAS Miramar Air Show

Friday - Sunday, October 12-14, 2012, Miramar Air Station, North Central San Diego, CA 

This annual Air Show is held each year as part of Fleet Week, a series of events to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military. Held at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, it has been voted the "World's Best Military Air Show" by the International Council of Air Shows and this year celebrates its 57th year. The three-day event is the largest military air show in the nation, with attendance last year estimated at 700,000.

This year’s show will feature more than 100 military and civilian aircraft on static display, and performances from many others including the Navy's Blue Angels, the Patriots Jet Team, the Silver Wings Wingwalking Team, the Marines Ideal Rapid Response Team. Just to name a few. The event will again include simulated combat demonstrations, a Twilight Show with the Great Wall of Fire and a firework grand finale.
